The Jelly Ear (Auricularia auricula-judae) likes damp conditions and usually grows on dead branches of elder. The brackets vary in shape but some of them look uncannily like purplish human ears. They are soft and gelatinous and covered in a fine down which makes it WORSE!
The fungus was formerly known as Jew's Ear or Judas's Ear (hence the Latin name) because the elder was one of the trees, Judas Iscariot is supposed to have hanged himself from after betraying Jesus. The brackets are said to be the expression of his tortured soul.
