Comfrey

Comfrey is also called Knitbone.  Its roots were once ground up to produce a sludge which was wrapped round a broken limb and hardened like plaster of paris.  (Info from 'Readers Digest Field Guide to Wild Flowers')

The flowers can be creamy or purple and the leaves are excellent on compost heaps or made into a soup to use as fertiliser.

Apparently if you lay comfrey leaves on the ground, slugs and snails will hide under them at night and can then be collected - if you are a mollusc collector.
