Also known as garlic mustard, Jack-by-the-hedge gets its name by the way it stands to attention alongside other plants, hedgerows and walls, where other plants would lean away.
Its decorative horseshoe-shaped leaves are a target for orange tip butterflies. Their caterpillars feed on this plant and on Lady's Smock.
It is the only non-allium plant to smell and taste of onions.
