Dog's Mercury is not a garden weed. It prefers the shade of woodlands or hedge bottoms.
This modest little plant can spread rapidly by underground runners rather than seeds as the male plants (illustrated here) rarely meet up with the female plants.
As it needs a some shade, it can compete with low growing woodland plants but not grass, so it is a bit of an ancient woodland indicator, as long as it is backed up by other AWIs.
